Just a couple of weeks ago there was a bundle on Bundle Stars to buy CK2 and a bunch of DLC for about $15, or the full price of one of the DLC. At the same time, there was a Humble Bundle to get everything for $30.I bought the Bundle Stars one, and just gave away the copies of stuff I already had to a friend who wanted to try CK2.I wouldn't necessarily say that full price is outrageous given how much entertainment you can get out of it, but. Yeah, if you can wait, bundles are the way to go. Play it first!
Pick a Catholic ruler and get a feel for it. The Expansions/DLCs tend to improve the game for specific cultural groups, and the Catholics are pretty fleshed out in vanilla, and are a great place to start!Once you've played that for a while and are starting to enjoy it you'll probably get better ideas of what you want to do next. Like 'I wanna be a viking', or 'I wanna be the Roman Empire', and then there are specific expansions which will either unlock what you need or improve the gameplay for whatever cultural group you want to go into!.
Legacy of Rome, Charlemagne, Old Gods, Sword of Islam, Sons of Abraham, The Republic, Sunset Invasion and Rajas of India each add new playable areas and mechanics. All the 2$ DLCs - the various Dynasty Shields, Unit packs, Song packs, and Portrait packs - add absolutely nothing at all to the gameplay, but add aesthetic variety - which, after a hundred hours ingame, is quite nice sometimes.Assuming your first half-dozen characters are going to be Eurocentric Catholics, your most important DLCs are going to be Legacy of Rome (5$) for the military flexibility it gives and Charlemagne (15$) for the early start date, ability to appoint viceroys, ability to play as prefeudal tribal bands, and ability to create custom non-de-jure titles. The various portrait packs (2$ ea) - Persian, Turkish, Mongol, African, Russian, Mediterranean, Norse, and Celtic - also add a quite useful bit of distinction to the game, making it much easier to tell various characters apart.After just a few playthroughs, you may want to spread out further.
Great thing about the CK2 dlc is that you only have to get whatever ones interest you! For adding the most to the vanilla game I would recommend Legacy of Rome, Charlemagne, and Sons of Abraham, the rest really depend on if you are interested in the factions they add.Get Old Gods for Pagans, Rajas of India for India, Sword of Islam for Muslims, and the Republic for Merchant republics.I have a hard time recommending Sunset Invasion, but if the alt history presented in it really interest you, then go for it.For the aesthetic dlcs its really up to you as well. For only 2$ each I would recommend getting the face and unit packs for the factions you like playing as, they are mostly really good. The music is only worth it if you like listening to the in game music.
If you find yourself muting the game and listening to your own music, its not really worth it. If you are strapped for cash wait for a sale (winter is coming) and grab Old Gods.
It adds the most content and lets you always do something if you play as the Norse and often lets you do something if you play as a pagan. Most new players get bored easily from how little there is to do at peace time. Old Gods fixes this be letting you raid and giving a basic CB for just expanding out.After Old Gods if you want even more go Rome, Abraham, Charlemagne, Rajs, Islam, Character Creators, EUIV Converter, Skins, Banners, Unit packs, Songs, e-book. That's if you want to support the game. Still, wait for a sale and go for what you actually care about. If you like Muslims buy sword of islam.
If you like indians buy Rajs. If you don't care about Saxons or Franks skip Charlemagne.
